Copper can be categorized into several types based on its characteristics and applications. Commonly used types in various industries today include:

Cu copper: This is the purest form of copper and has the highest electrical conductivity. Therefore, it’s suitable for use as a conductor in electrical wires, busbars, or other equipment.

OFC copper: This copper has been refined to remove oxygen, resulting in even better electrical conductivity. This type is frequently found in musical instruments and high-quality audio and video equipment.

Copper alloys: These are pure copper alloyed with other minerals such as tin, zinc, aluminum, nickel, etc., to enhance specific properties and make them suitable for specialized applications. Commonly used copper alloys include:

  • Brass: An alloy of copper and zinc in varying percentages. The addition of zinc affects the ductility and brittleness of brass.
  • Bronze: An alloy of copper and tin, resulting in a strong and durable bronze suitable for manufacturing equipment such as bearings, gears, coins, or sculptural designs.
  • Cupronickel: An alloy of copper and nickel to improve the copper’s corrosion resistance. It’s often used in marine resource applications. Coin production and other applications:
  • Beryllium copper: This is an alloy of copper and beryllium, possibly with small amounts of other minerals to increase its strength and durability. It is suitable for use in the manufacture of springs, electrical contacts, and spacecraft components, among others.

Copper does not rust, but it develops a patina from corrosion, such as oxide rust. This type of deposit forms on the surface of the material and acts as a protective coating against external weather conditions.

Copper is considered an environmentally friendly material because it can be recycled and reused indefinitely, making it a renewable resource that will never run out.

Copper is fire-resistant and non-conductive because it has a melting point of 1,085 degrees Celsius, which is higher than the temperature at which a fire occurs in a building. Therefore, using copper pipes in homes or buildings effectively helps reduce the spread of fire.
